Abu Dhabi – top places to visit!

July 5, 2016 by Margaret Scott

How to spend a day in Abu Dhabi?

visiting the top views is a great way to start…

Views On Top recently had a 15 hour layover in Abu Dhabi and did our best to experience the city. Starting with breakfast at the Hyatt Capital Gate, the angular building is a site to see and the view over the river truly wonderful with a delicious meal. Described as ‘The Best Mediterranean Restaurant in Abu Dhabi’ 18 Degrees offers an outstanding dining experience that is unique in Abu Dhabi, using simple flavours to enhance the inherent freshness of locally sourced produce.

Next stop Jumeirah at Etihad Towers Hotel, the Observation Deck at 300 offers amazing views over the city and Arabian Gulf. Beautiful buildings, wonderful views! Entrance is AED75 (US$ 20.5), with AED 50 (US$ 13.6) redeemable as Food & Beverage vouchers. Guests staying at the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers and children under four enter free.

Next stop? the Marina Eye Wheel… with fabulous views over the marina and nearby shopping centre. The rather quirky tower has a cafe at the top but its windows don’t give the best views over the marina…

Last stop, who could resist the world’s fastest roller coaster?

Ferrari World’s Formula Rossa is an absolute MUST DO for anyone who loves adrenalin and a ‘once off’ experience.

Strap in, put your goggles on and prepare to be blasted 240km/h in 4.9 seconds. After scaling heart-racing heights of 52 metres and with the adrenalin rush of 4.8Gs riding high, you’ll cross the finish feeling like a true Scuderia Ferrari champion. Highly recommended!!

Zürich – old, new, unique and lofty views

August 9, 2015 by Margaret Scott

In the heart of Europe, Zürich is the cultural and business capital of Switzerland. A vibrant city with much to offer – museums, galleries, restaurants, sophisticated shopping, a lively nightlife and more – it’s also well worth making the time to explore the city’s unique destinations with fabulous views. Here’s Views On Top’s top tips…

very old… Construction of the Grossmünste Romanesque-style Protestant church in the Old Town of Zürich began around 1100. The viewing platform at the top of Karlsturm (the tower of Charlemagne), 187 steps from the nave, offers wonderful views over the old town and the lake. Open Monday to Saturday and Sunday afternoons.GrossMunster views

old… Jules Verne Panoramabar is in the centre of the Old Town, below the Urania observatory.  With panoramic views over the old town, diners can enjoy a seasonal lunch menu and in the evenings, the cosy bar serves wines and cocktails.Jules VerneJukes Verne Panoramabar

new.. At the top of Zürich’s tallest building, Prime office tower in Zürich-west, Clouds scenic restaurant, bistro and bar afford panoramic views over the city, lake and busy Hauptbahnhof below.Clouds

uniquely invigorating … ThermalBad & Spa Zürich. Bathe in the mystic grotto in the old Hürlimann brewery’s hundred-year-old vaulted stone walls and then enjoy beautiful views of Zürich’s skyline from the outdoor rooftop thermal pool. The spa’s thermal water is drawn from the legendary “Aqui” springs, deep beneath the city of Zürich. This water is rich in valuable minerals and its soothing warmth promotes wellness and relaxation… a truly special, unique place to relax, rejuvenate and revitalise.Zurich Thermalbad

We recommend the Irish-Roman Spa Ritual for a really special experience, a unique and relaxing cleansing ritual. The secret lies in the changing sequence of rooms and themes, each devoted to a specific treatment. Through ten consecutive stations your body is gradually warmed, cleansed, relaxed and then cooled once again: floral steam bath (40°C), body peel, hot herbal steam bath (45°C), hot bath (40°C), Roman bath with massage jets (35°C), whirlpool, bubble lounger, shallow water area, heated lounger and exercise bath (28°C).
And after all this indulgence, don’t miss taking the elevator to enjoy the stunning views from the rooftop heated baths!

and then for a lofty view… Üetliberg mountain towers over Zürich and offers beautiful views of the city and lake – and on a clear day, a glimpse of the alps. At 2,850 feet above sea level, the mountain affords an impressive panoramic experience.

London’s best views

May 24, 2015 by Margaret Scott

In 1790 Samuel Johnson said “when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life” … it’s even truer today!!

Enjoy London’s best views from its oldest and newest buildings…

Whether you’re spending just a few days in London or have lived there for years… do you know where to go for London’s best views? Views On Top has ~30 destinations with great views across London; if you don’t have time to visit them all we’ve compiled a short-list, a mix of old and new places with great views over one of the world’s most exciting cities…

First stop, St Pauls’ Cathedral dome.

St Paul's dome

The current cathedral was completed in 1708 and its history is awe-inspiring from the moment you step inside. Don’t miss climbing the well-worn circular steps (all 247 of them) to experience the unique acoustics of the Whispering Gallery, then it’s 119 steps to spectacular views from the Stone Gallery and just another 152 steps to the Golden Gallery, 111 metres above London. Keep your eyes straight ahead if you get queasy with heights on the open metal stairs near the top, the last part of the journey is well worth it for the reward – iconic views over The Thames, City of London and beyond. (Tip – buy your tickets before you go to avoid entry queues).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA St Paul's

Stroll across the Millennium bridge and if you’ve time, pop into the Tate Modern for a cuppa in the level 6 cafe and great views back to St Paul’s, then walk along the south bank of the Thames (or grab a taxi) to experience the highest viewing platform in western Europe’s tallest building, The View from the Shard.

The ShardNext to London Bridge tube station (the entrance is on Joiner Street), on a clear day the view from Level 72, at 244m or 800 ft, can extend 40 miles over all of London. (Tip: book in advance to avoid queues).IMG_7291 View from the Shard

There are also great views half way up at the Acqua Shard on level 31 (enter at 31 St. Thomas St). Open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and into the early hours, the contemporary décor creates a truly 21st century ambience. (Tip – meal reservations open three months in advance, bar tables are first come first served)

Walk across London Bridge and prepare to be amazed by the expansive top floor at 20 Fenchurch St (the “Walkie Talkie” building). Sky Garden opened in 2015 and is London’s highest public garden, with an open air terrace offering outstanding views across the Thames to the Shard and beyond.

IMG_7696Marvel at the lush garden and expansive views up and down the Thames as you climb to the top and look over the City of London’s iconic skyscrapers – the Gherkin, Cheesegrater and Heron/Salesforce Tower. Stunning as the sun sets, you can enjoy Sky Pod Bar from breakfast until late and choose from several fine-dining options. (Tip – book Sky Garden free entry in advance)

Our final recommendation is the Rumpus Room at the top of the Mondrian London hotel, near Blackfriars Bridge in the Sea Containers building. With fabulous views over the Thames and St Pauls, on a warm summer evening it’s a beautiful place to enjoy a champagne or cocktail and small plates with friends into the late hours.IMG_7578IMG_7576

The world’s highest observation deck is now at the Burj Khalifa

November 15, 2014 by Margaret Scott

The highest observation deck in the world is a new reason to visit the Burj Khalifa in Dubai!

At 555m or 1,821 ft high, At The Top, Burj Khalifa SKY on level 148  now holds the Guinness World Record for “Highest Observation Deck”. With an outdoor terrace, the new deck beats the previous world record holder, Canton Tower in Guangzhou, China (at 1,601 feet).

Visitors to the new observation level ascend via a dedicated elevator and can enjoy 360 degree views from level 125 on the way back to earth.

Dubai’s most iconic destination includes interactive experiences with a life-size screen to explore different corners of the Emirate.

The Burj Khalifa holds three other world records – tallest building, tallest man-made structure and highest restaurant.

Best views in New York

June 27, 2014 by Margaret Scott

New York, New York. Such a beautiful city and skyline, the question many visitors ask is – where do you go for the best views in New York?

Iconic skyscrapers with observation decks, The Top of The Rock Observation Deck at the Rockefeller Centre and the Empire State Building, are soon to be joined by One World Trade Centre’s Observation Deck (expected to open in 2015, a date is yet to be announced).

The Top of The Rock Observation Deck is a wonderful destination for visitors looking for stunning panoramas of New York. There are unobstructed views thanks to the highest floor being recessed from the building’s edge and not needing safety protection, and timed ticketing makes visiting stress-free. To the south there’s a unique view of the Empire State Building with One World Trade Centre in the distance, and to the north, there’s an impressive view over Central Park and north Manhattan.

Be sure to see the gorgeous Swarovski crystal chandelier in the Top of The Rock’s entrance foyer, it’s tiered shape subtly mirrors the Rockefeller Centre building outline.

Since I last visited New York in 2001, many ‘summer season’ rooftop bars have opened for people to be able to enjoy the city’s views while relaxing with friends. My goal on visiting in 2014 was to visit as many rooftop bars as I could, to ensure Views On Top has a good selection for our users to explore.

With most bars only opening at 5pm and just four nights booked to stay in New York, visiting all of the places on my list and the few more I learned of whilst there was certainly a logistical challenge! Helped by a few taxi rides across town, it took endurance and determination to keep going whilst resisting the temptation for a drink or snack in each place. By 11pm on the fourth night I’d chalked up 18 rooftop and terrace bars with great views.  I’ll look forward to visiting the few I unfortunately missed next time I visit!

So, here’s a short-list of my four favourite rooftop bars for their views, ordered from north to south in Manhattan … [Read more…]

Taking on a fear of heights

June 2, 2014 by Margaret Scott

Stratosphere X-Scream, Las Vegas.

To complete my quest and prove to myself once and for all that I have conquered a life-long fear of heights, this year I set myself a challenge to visit Las Vegas and experience the rides on top of the Stratosphere Tower which, at 350 metres, is the tallest freestanding tower in the USA.

Whoever dreamt up these three rides designed to thrill or terrorise you, must have had an amazing sense of adventure (or perhaps a sadistic nature).
